Want to start selling at Craft Fairs?

Are you an addicted crafter? Have decided to start selling your crafts at a craft fair? Then there must be a number of questions you want to ask, such as how to book fairs and setting up your display. I have been selling my crafts at fairs and shows for over three years and I would like to share some of my experience and knowledge to help you get ready for your first shows.

Finding and Booking Craft Fairs
Great places for finding local craft fairs include websites, forums, local papers and social media sites. These are great tools for finding out about craft fairs in your local area as well as ones all around the Country. But also don't forget to check things like notice boards, local authorities' websites and newsletters for small fairs that may go under the radar. Keep a check and start booking up in advance as some will fill up fast.
Before you book a craft fair you have to look into the legal requirements such as Public Liability Insurance for yourself and your products to cover liabilities. Another factor to take into account is that some event organisers can have a strict Handmade Goods policy. If this is so, then you may need to show examples of your work to let them know what you're intending to sell. Get to know your market Don't just book every craft or gift fair you come across, think about the type of people that will be attending and ask yourself if your craft will fit in. You don't want to waste money or your precious time.
I learnt my lesson when I booked to do a Mind, Body and Spirit event that was in my local area. Unfortunately, my handmade 3D cards were not what the clientele were looking for and I only made £11 all in all, and as it was one of my first events, I was devastated.

Think about your displayYou need to put some time and effort into your display. In my opinion, customers are more attracted to bright, clean and tidy displays. Always use a clean and ironed tablecloth that is long enough to cover any storage boxes you may keep underneath the table. Think about how you want to display your crafts and how they can best be shown off. For example, if you sell jewellery, you may want to bring extra lighting to bring out the sparkle, this instantly makes it more enticing to the customer. Good display stands can be bought on all good auction websites such as Ebay, at affordable prices. This may allow you to buy a number of different stands instead of spending a fortune on just one. I believe investment in you display is vital; this is what potential customers will judge you on. As you do more and more fairs your display will change and improve, it is almost an art form. Invest in a good display and you should see good returns.

Prepare your StockEnsure that you bring plenty of stock with you and that it is well organised. If you have a particular best seller, bring as many as you can make as you will kick yourself if you sell out and the demand is still there and you know you have left them at home.

Keep a positive attitudeThere will be times when you don't sell, and times when others next to you sell and you don't. If you know you have a great product then try not to let these times get you down. Use it as an opportunity to evaluate your display, pricing, table space and if you are selling to the right type of customer. Try to keep a positive attitude. You obviously have a good product, it can simply be because some craft fairs are not a good fit for you, or sometimes it could be down to the organiser who may have booked too many of the same craft, which can put off some customers as they do not feel they have enough choice.

Doing craft fairs on your own
It is generally a good idea to do a craft fair with a friend or family member. All the extra help you can get is a bonus; also they can keep you company if it is quite. However, if you are doing one on your own, there is no need to panic. Generally, crafters are a very friendly bunch and enjoy chatting and helping each other out. If you need an ever important toilet break, someone is likely to watch your stall. Sometimes, being on your own can work out better as you are more likely to get chatting and it's a great opportunity to network and find out a wealth of information about other craft fairs in the area and what fairs they believe are worth doing. It is always great to get first-hand experience. All the advice I have given in this article is from my own experience and I believe if you follow some of these tips and invest in each fair you do, you will see good returns.

Helpful Paypal Info - Refund Fees

Been Working on a Quilt

I finally had a few hours to work on the log cabin quilt last week. I should have a few more hours this week despite my busy schedule. I doubt it will be finished by Christmas as I'd hoped but I'm going to work really hard so it will be finished soon after Christmas. I can't wait to show pics. Finally! I finished the "big" order yesterday. Below is a picture of one of the two shower curtains I made. Miniature Christmas Grapevine Wreath Tutorial

This is a fast and easy project to make and sell at craft shows and bazaars. Make several in less than an hour.

Supplies

3” diameter grapevine wreaths

Cranberry stems

1 ½” red bows with twist wire

Jute string

Glue gun and glue sticks

Wire cutters

Instructions

1. Stick cranberry stems into wreath. Glue in place. Cut excess wire from back of wreath.

2. Cut 12” of jute. Attach to top of wreath by looping.

3. Twist red bow around front of jute. Glue for stronger hold if desired. Tie a knot at top of jute to finish hanger.

Clothespin Angel Ornie Tutorial

These are quick and easy to make. Attach the finished angels to the tree by the clothespin itself or sew a ribbon hanger to the back of the angel. These can also be used as bowl ornies or garland decorations!

Supplies

Push Clothespins

White fabric

Gold or silver strung beads

Gold or silver 1/8” ribbon (3mm)

Glue gun and glue sticks

Needle & white thread

Optional: Spray adhesive & clear glitter

Instructions

1. Cut gown fabric 3” L x 7 ½” W. Glue or sew 7 ½” length of ribbon to bottom of gown. Sew ends together using ¼” seam allowance so you have a finished piece 3” L x 3 ½” W.

2. For wings, cut fabric 10” L x 3” W. Sew ends using ¼” seam allowance so you have a finished piece 4 ¼” L x 3” W.

3. With seam centered, turn raw edges under ¼” and sew the edges together.

Sew top and bottom of wing edges

4. Gather center of the wings. Then wrap thread around the gather a few times to hold. Tie off thread in the back.

5. If adding sparkle, spray adhesive onto wings and gown. Sprinkle glitter over both. Allow to dry completely (this may take up to 24 hours).

6. Cut beads to length so to fit the angel’s “head”. Glue in place to resemble a halo.

7. Place gathering stitch around neckline. Place gown onto clothespin angel and gather neckline. Tie a 12” length of ribbon around the “neck”. It may be necessary to add a dab of hot glue in spots to hold ribbon. Cut off excess ends.

8. Glue wings – centered - onto back of angel (seam facing the clothespin).

9. Now you can add to tree, garland, wreath or bowl.

New Quilt, Two Classes, and Finished Projects

I got my husband's quilt on the quilting rack and began quilting it over the weekend.

I got a hangers cut for four of my rag quilt ball ornaments and got those sewn up. Remember the picture of the silk flowers from last week. Well those have been arranged and glued to the wreaths. I'm not satisfied with those at this moment so they may not be finished. I'll have to look at them for a while before I decide what else I want to do with those.

Below I got the tips of the pinecones painted - antique white, burgundy and hunter green. They were too large to place on the floral wreaths so I'll decide what to do with them later. I saved the left-over silk flowers in the same bag. They may go well with the pinecones if I decide to simply throw them into a bowl.

I also got the private rag quilt class finished last week and emailed to the student, and I finished writing the new doll class for you all. I won't get both dolls finished for the class before the newsletter goes out Friday as I had hoped. Fall Wreath Tutorial

I thought you might enjoy this tutorial. It's very simple and quick to make. I have provided the picture below with a couple of samples of finished wreaths.

Supplies
wreath
assortment of silk fall flowers and leaves
hot glue gun
wire cutters

You can purchase the wreath, flowers and leaves at the Dollar Tree. These would be perfect for those fall craft shows. You don’t have much invested so you don’t have to put a large price tag on them to make a profit. Besides that they take only 15 to 30 minutes to complete. I used a 9” wreath for this creation but there are several different sizes available so that you can create wall hangings from the larger ones or candle collars from the smaller ones. You can use as many or as few materials as you want in order to create a unique fall wreath.

Instructions
1.Cut stems to about 2” long.

2. Start inserting your flowers or stemmed leaves into your wreath randomly.

3. When you’re satisfied with the arrangement, glue into place.

4. Snip away any excess stems in the back.

5. Glue a few layers of non-stemmed leaves onto the wreath if you’re using those.

6. Add a hanger if these will be wall or door mounted. Homespun, rusty wire, or jute cord are great to use as hangers.

Baked a Cake and Bought Supplies

There really hasn't been much going on since I finished Dad's quilt last week. I did manage to bake a halloween cake. It's very cute....with orange icing and bat and pumpkin sprinkles on top. You should have the Pillsbury mix and supplies at your grocery store.

I have the private class almost completed. I'll proofread it once more before I send that to the student. I have started on one of the classes that I promised in last week's newsletter as well.

I also bought the supplies below to make a couple of small Christmas wreaths. I'll look through my stash to find the perfect fabric and ribbons to accompany these supplies.

Finished my Dad's Quilt!

I told you I'd finish the quilt this week.....after 8 months of working on it. I'm so excited! Below are a few pictures. Click on them to enlarge. Finished size is 75" x 89". I machine pieced the 1,144 squares together then hand quilted about 15,000 stitches. Only the length is quilted as you can see in the last photo but you can only tell from the back. For those who are just finding out about this quilt, it is titled Dad's Diamond because of the pattern in the center. You can see the border at the top of the quilt in the first photo. That border is around all four sides and is supposed to mimic the sparkle of a diamond. The pictures really don't do the quilt justice but I think you can see enough of the details to appreciate the work. All in all, only 77 hours went into the entire project. Finding those 77 hours was the most difficult. Fifteen of those hours were dedicated to the quilt this week. This has been one of the slowest weeks I have had during the entire 8 months.

Hubby's quilt is next. LOL! But not before I get a few classes finished.

Finished a Doll!

I finished a new doll Friday. Actually I made 3 of the one pictured below. One went to my mom and the other to my future daughter-in-law. I took Saturday off to enjoy with the family. Sunday I caught up on the work around the house that I let go Friday and Saturday. Today I'm back to work on my dad's quilt. I WILL finish it this week. I'll post pictures by the end of the week. Really!

While we were out Saturday I saw a quilt I really wanted but the lady wanted $400 for it. Yes it was worth it but I'm light on cash right now. So I'll make a similar one for myself. A smaller one should cost me less than $100. It isn't instant gratification but I'll eventually have one.

I have a private rag quilt class to create for a lady who recently purchased one of my rag quilts so I'll work on that this week also. And I'll start on a new doll class for you all as well. Two for one actually! Then a small quilt class will be a three for one offer. I want to have these classes ready in time for you all to make them as gifts for Christmas.

Tidying the Website

I thought today would be a good day for an update on my crafting progress. I have started working on 3 witch dolls - a pattern by Chestnut Junction. They shouldn't take too long to complete....just need to work on them in every spare moment. I have only a few hours left on my Dad's quilt to finish it. I usually work on it better in the mornings so I guess I should try to get up early this week to complete it.

As far as classes, I have started my own doll class but it is very detailed so it won't be done any time soon. I do have a few more less detailed classes I can work on until the doll class is finished. I'll start one or two of those after I complete the witch dolls and the quilt.

I hope you don't mind that today's blog post has absolutely nothing to do with crafting. I'm at the age that I really need to take care of myself in order to take care of the family and to continue to do the crafts that I love. I read two great articles about women's health in the October 2011 issue of Woman's Day magazine that are easy for me to promote good health. I just wanted to share this news with you because so many women don't worry about their health. We need to take care of ourselves as much as we take care of the others in our lives. A few simple things can help us maintain that healthy lifestyle in just a few minutes a day.

All I'm going to say is that from this day forward, I WILL eat an apple a day and I WILL walk 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. To find out why, you'll have to read the magazine.

Quilt Top and New Rag Quilt from Garden Box Rag Quilt Class

I wanted to also show you that can use the rag quilt classes to create traditional quilts as well. You'll see the rag quilt in the top photo. The bottom photo is of a traditional quilt top that I created this week from the same class. The seams are in the back instead of the front and I used 1/4" seam allowance. Of course no snipping is required on the traditional quilt. I love the way both of these turned out.

A Slow Day this Week

I'm finally getting a slow day this week. It has been a busy week with our hamster dying and yard work to do. I couldn't bare to leave the hamster in her last hours so that day was spent with her. The next day we buried her and now I'm trying to create a memorial area in the back yard for her. Out of all the animals I've ever had, she is the one I was the closest to. She provided so many hours of laughter and joy in our lives.

The yard work is always great stress relief so we did that Wednesday. Yesterday was spent doing laundry and straightening up the house. So today I'm ready to get back to work on the quilts. Hopefully I can complete at least one quilt this weekend.

I did manage to remember to bid on a blue double wedding ring quilt top that I started watching last week. I won it! I've always wanted to make one so I thought I'd start with this one. It was mostly completed by the lady's grandmother before she passed away. There are still some unfinished areas that will give me some practice. I've provided pictures below of everything I got with this quilt top....the book and everything (except the batting) to complete the top for $100. I think I got an exceptional deal. I'm sure I would have spent more than that on the fabric for the top alone - Probably another $100 on the backing, binding and book. It appears that the grandmother used the exact fabrics called for that are showing on the back cover of the book so that will fairly indicate the time that she started the quilt. I'm very excited to finish this quilt. Of course, finished pictures will be shown here. Ü Have a great weekend!

Cut fabric for four new quilts

I spent several hours over the weekend cutting out fabric for four new quilts. I'm trying to catch up on some of my sewing now that we're comfortable with our new homeschool year.

This will be a (mostly) blue Christmas rag quilt.

This one will be a traditional quilt that I'm creating using a new rag quilt class so you can see how flexible these rag quilt classes are.

This one will be a Christmas rag quilt made from traditional Christmas colors. This one will not include batting in order to show you another flexible issue with these quilts.

This will be a new rag quilt class soon. I'm already working on step 8 of 15 for this quilt....even after all of the cutting I did this weekend.

Basic Sewing Tips

Basic Sewing Tips

If you’re new to sewing, you’ll need to know a few basic tips before you start your first project. Following is a list of tips that I recommend to each of my students.

1. First of all, don’t spend a lot of money on your first sewing machine. There are lots of nice sewing machines priced under $100. You can buy a more expensive machine after you master the basic techniques.

2. Buy at least one case of metal bobbins, a seam ripper, a package of straight pins, scissors, and a pack of size 12 sewing machine needles when you buy your sewing machine. Why?

   a. Metal bobbins remain properly seated in the bobbin housing when the thread becomes low
       – unlike the lightweight plastic bobbins. I recommend getting an entire case so that you can
       wind several when you are working on a large project. Even if your first few projects are
       small, you will eventually have that first big project. Having several bobbins wound for that
       project will save you time as you change out empty bobbins.

b. Size 12 needles accommodate most normal sewing projects using cotton fabric.

c. No matter how many years you sew, you’ll need a seam ripper from time to time – and
more often than not when you first start sewing.

d. Pins are necessary for holding pieces together until your project is sewn.

e. Scissors do not need an explanation. Ü

3. Read the sewing machine manual before you use your machine. Always refer to it when in doubt about a sewing project (such as what type of needle to use with certain fabrics). If you purchase a used machine without a manual, it’s likely that you’ll find one online to order or download.

4. Practice makes perfect. You don’t have to dive right into a sewing project. Buy inexpensive cotton fabric to practice sewing straight lines and to improve speed and accuracy. This also allows you to get familiar with your machine and its features.

5. When you’re ready for your first project, test your stitches on the exact layers of sample pieces you’ll be using. For example, if you’ll be using batting between two layers of fabric, layer them exactly as you’ll layer your project and sew a row of stitches to see if the tension is correct. Each front and back stitch should measure between 1/16” to 1/8” long. The tension wheel is on the front or top of your machine and has numbers on it. Adjust if necessary and sew more sample stitches. Repeat until the tension is set properly. All battings and fabrics are not created equally. Each has its own thickness and should be dealt with before you begin each project. If not, you may wind up with puckered or loose stitches. Save this stitch sample as you may need it to test stitches again if number 6 should happen.

6. Given that you have already set your tension properly, and you suddenly notice that you have funny loops in your stitches (usually the back stitches), you likely have one of the following problems: a dull needle, the thread is hung up somewhere leading from either the bobbin or the spool, or you have too much dust build-up in your machine. Turn off and unplug your machine to troubleshoot!

a. Change your needle first as that is the most likely cause. Then use your sample fabric/batting that you used to set your tension to test-stitch to see if the loops are gone. If the loops still appear, then go to step b.

b. Remove the spool and bobbin (and all thread) completely from the machine. Re-fit everything appropriately and test again. If these test stitches result in loops, then go to step c.

c. Carefully clean the dust from inside the machine according to the manual and test again.

If none of these correct the problem, your internal tension may be messed up and will have to be checked by a professional. However, in my 10 plus years of sewing, one of the first three problems has always been the cause of those loops for me.

7. Most sewing machines have a diagram on the machine to show you how to thread your machine from the spool and how to load your bobbins correctly. This information will also be in the sewing machine manual. If done improperly you will get funky stitches.

8. Cotton is the easiest fabric to sew. But no matter what fabric you purchase, buy more than what a pattern calls for. This will allow you extra to correct errors in most cases and allow for edges to be straightened. Straightening the edges sometimes requires removing 4 or more inches from the length which may result in not having enough fabric to finish your project if you purchased only what the pattern calls for.

9. I always recommend that you NOT use lined, checkered or plaid fabrics in your first few projects. These are what I refer to as directional fabrics and can be tedious even for the seasoned sewer. Select fabrics with multi-directional designs like circles, paisley and other similar fabrics.

10. Use solid fabrics as little as possible. These are….well….boring and should be used sparingly.

11. You’ll find most of your coordinating fabrics are grouped together in fabric stores. That’s helpful for beginners. But don’t be afraid to walk around the store and compare your selection to other fabrics. There are dots along the fabric edge (a.k.a. selvage) that recommend colors that can be used with that fabric.

12. Woven fabrics like homespun and ticking are nice because both sides are the same. If you select prints, you have to be aware of the “right side” and “wrong side”. The right side is the print side and the wrong side is the opposite side.

13. Pay attention to the thread that you’re purchasing. Machine Quilting and All Purpose threads can be used with domestic sewing machines. Hand Quilting and other thick threads are too thick for a sewing machine needle to pull through fabric.

14. Most of all be patient. You don’t have to finish a project in a day. As a matter of fact your finished product will likely look better if you stop when you’re tired and come back to it another day. It may take several days to finish a project depending on the size. I find that two or three hours of sewing a day is sufficient when working on projects. I make fewer mistakes and I don’t get bored or worn out with my projects that way.

Finished Log Cabin Quilt Top

Work in Progress

I had a fairly productive week last week despite all the interruptions like housework and similar other routine stuff. I just clamped Dad's quilt to finish the last few rows that I need to quilt on that half. I should be finished with just over half of the length of his quilt this week. I have since turned the rack around so I move back and forth from his quilt and whatever I'm working on at my machine in a quicker fashion. In other words, the chair only has to be moved a few inches instead of a couple of feet each time I decide to work in a new location now. With all that's going on in my daily life, it takes me a while to think of this simple stuff but it eventually comes to me. Ü

The sunflower bucket on the floor near my sewing table had several panels for my rag quilt ball ornaments. I got several of those sewn together last week as well. I'll stuff and decorate them during homeschool classes as I have time during the next couple of weeks.

I now have 3 rows of hubby's log cabin quilt completed. Only two more rows to go on that to finish the quilt top. Did I mention that it takes four small squares to complete one large square? I work on one large square a day and it takes 3 large squares to complete a row so I should be finished piecing it next week unless I get a lot of extra time this week. And I don't really see that happening. I keep the iron and an old wooden cutting board handy to press the each section of the squares as I piece each section. Again this is a time-saving technique. This is currently taking me about an hour to complete one large square. I'm sure it would take a couple of hours if I were getting up every few seconds to press theses seams at an ironing board even if it were right behind me.

You can see the stack of fabric behind Dad's quilt in the second picture. Those will eventually become new rag quilts for new rag quilt classes......hopefully before Christmas. The first two rows or hubby's quilt top are thrown on top.

Right now I have a little case of the sniffles and hoping it doesn't turn into anything major. I'm hoping it's just allergies from mowing last week and that it will pass quickly. I'm drinking my orange juice just in case it is a cold though. I can't afford any down time right now. Hubby has bought some woodworking tools for his new hobby and I really want to practice using them soon. Woodburning is something else that has peaked my interest. So hopefully all of this will bring some new non-sewing classes to our virtual classroom soon.

Finished Baby Quilt

I finally finished the baby quilt I've been working on for the past two weeks. Due to an emergency, I finished about three days later than I estimated, but the lady is very sweet and understanding. Again, I want to stress that Sarah did all the piecing herself. I just machine quilted it and hand stitched the binding in place.

If you'll remember, I was a tad bit worried about getting the green strips on the back centered perfectly. Well, it turned out great! I'm extremely pleased. I hope Sarah is as well.

Lots of Quilting Going on

I'm almost finished with the current rag quilt class that's at the sewing machine. I have four more rag quilt classes and a shelf sitter class that are on the drawing table. I ordered two sets of log cabin quilt block kits to make my husband a quilt from. What a time saver! I've always wanted to make one of these quilts so when I found these kits from http://myworld.ebay.com/eyecandyfabrics/?_trksid=p4340.l2559 I went ahead and ordered them. I completed one block just to see what I had gotten myself into and it was very simple. You
can see my first finished block below.

I'm continuing to work steadily on my dad's quilt. I hope to have an update photo to show you all shortly. A very nice lady that I met at Hancock Fabric a couple of weeks ago dropped off her pieced quilt top and backing for me to quilt for her granddaughter. She actually pieced the backing! I love it! I've recently read an article about pieced backings but this is the first time I've seen one. I should have this one done in about two weeks since she has already done most of the work. The quilting will be done on the machine but I want to bind it by hand.

Selecting Batting for Quilt Projects

As a quilter, I often get asked about how to select batting for quilt projects. For me low loft, traditional or cotton batting work best. High loft batting shifts quite a bit which makes the fabric shift causing numerous headaches. Many people have expressed this same opinion to me.

What's the difference between low loft, traditional and cotton batting? Traditional and cotton batting are very similar in texture and appearance. However, traditional batting is made of polyester and is typically less expensive than the cotton batting. These are very thin. Low loft batting is also made of polyester and it has that squishy feel to it that so many quilters crave.

How do you decide which batting to use for your projects? Any of these work well with any quilting project. The only time that cotton batting is required is if you plan to use batting in the center of your quilted potholders. Polyester is spun plastic and will likely melt if you use it to remove hot items - even if it's sandwiched between two pieces of cotton fabric. Additional advice is that you should use several layers of cotton batting if you're going to use this for potholders in order to avoid burns. Other materials are also available that deflect heat that you may want to check into when making potholders.

The low loft batting is highly preferred because of the familiar "puffy" look quilters want when they make their quilts. Below are a couple of pictures to give you an idea of the way these different types of batting look.

I am a jack of all trades crafter. I can do 6 crafts in total though one is a bit shaky. I have been crafting since I was 5 years old. My mom taught me how to do all but one of my crafts. I took a class on the oil painting, and picked up the rest myself. I am currently focusing on crocheting. I have been doing that for almost 21 years.

I am currently a Student at Univerity of Phoenix. I just started on March 8th my Bachelors of Science degree with a concentration in Software Engineering. On Feburary 20th I completed my Associates in Visual Communications. Had about a 3 week cooling off period.

I am the mommy to two fur babies. Dixie my Rat Terrier and Mason my Italian Greyhound. Mason will be 8 on August 11th and Dixie 8 on Sept 16th. They are getting to be old, but they still act like youngsters.

I am a horrible craft stash addict. about 90 percent of my room is craft storage. I am trying to get through all the yarn so I can clean out my closet some. Then after the yarn it will be the latch hook stash and then onto my cross stitching stash. Once I get all the stash taken care of I won't buy but one thing to do at a time. I hope.....
